Party History

The Green Party of Ontario (GPO) became an officially registered political party in 1983, and has been growing ever since, expanding its membership and rising in the polls.

In the 1999 provincial election, we fielded 58 candidates, and became the fourth largest party in the province. Between 2003 and 2014, we continued to grow as a party, and for the first time in history, we had a full slate of candidates and garnered over 8% of the vote.

Electing Our First MPP

In 2018, we made history by electing the first Green MPP at Queen’s Park. Mike Schreiner was elected in Guelph with over 45 per cent of the vote!

During his time at Queen’s Park, Mike has been an outspoken advocate for climate action, local food and water, housing affordability, LTC, small businesses, mental health and Indigenous rights.

In 2019, he passed Ontario’s first-ever Green law, which protects electric vehicle drivers, and introduced other bills to conserve drinking water, get big money out of politics, and remove routine sick notes.

In the 2022 general election, Mike again won decisively increasing his vote share to 54.5 per cent.

Our Caucus Doubles

In November 2023, we elected our second MPP when Aislinn Clancy, a school social worker and city council member, scored a landslide victory in the by-election in Kitchener Centre.
