Schreiner statement on possible changes to judicial appointments
January 30, 2020
“It’s difficult to trust the Ford government based on their track record of repeated cronyism.
Ontario’s major legal organizations are telling the Ford government there is nothing to fix.
It’s worrying that the Attorney General wants to tamper with a system described as the “gold standard” by the Ontario Court of Justice.
Add it to the list of power trips that includes firing independent commissioners and abusing the public appointment process to reward friends and allies.
Judges should continue to be selected based on merit rather than political allegiance, and I will stand with the legal community to oppose changes that harm democracy.”
